Music Education for ALL: Panel Discussion

In my presentation for a panel discussion held at the Redlands University, Marin Campus on April 27, 2024, I discussed these several points:

  • Everyone is born musical, and music education should be provided at an early age to lay a solid foundation in child development.
  • Respect for students’ cultural identity is crucial in music education to allow them to freely express themselves.
  • Cultural fluidity is emphasized due to technological innovations and globalization, leading to new challenges in connecting with students with diverse musical tastes.
  • The issue of “identity fog” is prevalent, especially in urban areas, where students are influenced by foreign popular music due to technology.
  • Incorporating students’ authentic cultural identity in music education is essential, advocating for a diverse and inclusive approach.
  • The concept of “musical mother tongue” is complex in multicultural communities, requiring a shift towards a more student-focused and diverse music education program.
  • Music educators should engage in research to connect with school communities and address cultural connections and relevance in music education.
