Creative Music Teaching & Cultural Connections:
Strategies for Moving from Simple to Complex Learning Across Grades
Kodály Association of Southern California / Orange County Orff Chapter
Concordia University, Irvine, California | Saturday, October 25, 2025

It was truly a joy to gather with music educators for a joint workshop of the Kodály Association of Southern California and the Orange County Orff Chapter at Concordia University, Irvine. Bringing together Kodály- and Orff-inspired educators in one shared space created an atmosphere of openness, curiosity, and collegial exchange—one where singing, moving, playing, creating, and reflecting were woven naturally into the learning experience.
The session explored lesson planning strategies that move intentionally from simple to complex learning, applicable across grade levels. Through part singing, movement, game playing, instrumental work, improvisation, and creative exploration, participants experienced how a single musical idea can be expanded thoughtfully to support musical growth, differentiation, and deeper understanding.
One of the highlights of the workshop was working with Ewa Bule (Wau Bulan), a Malay folk song generously shared with me by my colleague Susanna Saw. This material offered a beautiful opportunity to interweave poetry, song, movement, and instruments, demonstrating how culturally rooted repertoire can become a rich springboard for creative music making. Participants joyfully discovered how even the simplest material can lead to sophisticated musical thinking when guided with intention.
Throughout the session, it was a delight to see educators fully engaged—singing wholeheartedly, moving freely, experimenting with ideas, and reflecting thoughtfully on classroom application. The workshop emphasized how culturally responsive teaching is not an “add-on,” but rather a powerful way to make music learning relevant, inclusive, and joyful, especially in today’s post-pandemic classrooms where attention, connection, and meaning are more essential than ever.
Seeing both familiar and new faces made the day especially meaningful. I am deeply grateful to the board of officers of the Kodály Association of Southern California for inviting me back for a second year, and to the board of officers of the Orange County Orff Chapter for this wonderful collaboration. Opportunities like this affirm the strength of our shared mission: to create learning spaces where rigor and joy coexist, and where music becomes a bridge for connection, expression, and cultural celebration.
Thank you to all who came ready to sing, move, play, reflect, and reimagine what music education can be.
